Start with identity, not branding
A professional website and a familiar logo do not establish that you are dealing with the genuine firm. The FCA describes clone scams in which fraudsters copy details of authorised businesses. A registration number alone is therefore insufficient. You need to match the legal entity, permissions and contact details independently.

Use the relevant official register
Identify the regulator relevant to the entity and service being offered in your jurisdiction. Navigate to the regulator's website independently, not through a link supplied in an unsolicited message. If a provider claims UK authorisation, the FCA Firm Checker is one official starting point. An overseas authorisation does not automatically establish permission or protection in your country.

Match the details exactly
Compare the website domain, telephone number and legal name against the regulator's record. Contact the firm using the details on that official record if something is unclear. Be cautious if a salesperson says the register is outdated or asks you to use a different payment destination. Stop and investigate discrepancies rather than letting urgency decide for you.
Read the agreement you would actually sign
Find the exact contracting entity, product description, fees, withdrawal terms, complaint process and treatment of client money. Check whether the advertised service is within the stated permissions. Do not assume a firm's authorisation means every product it promotes is protected or suitable. Keep a dated copy of the information you relied on.
Recognise pressure as a reason to pause
Claims of guaranteed returns, demands for secrecy, remote-access requests and pressure to transfer immediately should interrupt the process. A displayed trading balance or a screenshot from another customer is not independent proof that funds can be withdrawn. Avoid sharing identity documents until you have established who will receive them and why.
Keep a verification record
Create a short checklist with the entity name, register URL, date checked, contact match and unresolved questions. This article is a checking process, not an endorsement of any provider. If you suspect fraud, preserve messages and payment records and use the relevant regulator's or law-enforcement body's official reporting channel. Do not pay an unsolicited recovery service simply because it promises to retrieve lost money.
